Block Guides

Block: The Broadsheet of the Auckland Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Architects was launched in the mid-2000s by Pip Cheshire and other youngsters (including Andrew) then on the staff at Cheshire Architects. Initially an addendum to the NZIA Auckland Branch newsletter, it was intended as a venue for commentary and research on the local architecture scene. Ambitions were modest – we simply sought to slow the newsletter’s journey to the recycle bin – but within a few issues it had replaced the newsletter. Now, nearly 15 years on, Block has survived as one of the longest running publications in the current New Zealand architecture scene.

These maps and guides to specific aspects of New Zealand architecture were originally published in conjunction with Block. They were produced in collaboration with many of New Zealand’s best writers on architecture, including Julia Gatley, Bill McKay, Pip Cheshire, Sean Flanagan, Linda Tyler, Robin Skinner, and Michael Dudding.
