Te Atatu Baptist Church

This is a current project for a small church on Te Atatu Peninsula. Previous facilities for the church followed a suburban model, with a large building well back from the road and surrounded by carparking. The new facilities are intended to extend the adjacent village center, placing the church directly on the road frontage, with key facilities and outdoor areas oriented to the footpath.

The project looks to extend New Zealand’s rich history of timber church design, making use of humble materials. Two wooden boxes—made from cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels—house the main facilities. The worship space is a simple box formed from exposed CLT panels, with light filtering in through the roof trusses and a screen of simple wooden battens. A second box contains church offices, meeting rooms, rental offices, and a food bank.

The development also includes housing, including a manse for the church’s minister.
